Memphis-based St. Jude unveils world’s first proton therapy center for children
Beginning construction in 2011, the St. Jude Red Frog Events Proton Therapy Center, has celebrated the first pediatric-only proton center with a grand opening event. After FDA approval on November 2nd 2015, the center is hoping to treat 100 patients in the first year.
Dr. James Downing, chief executive officer of St. Jude, called the center an engineering marvel that will “usher in a new era in the treatment of children with brain tumors, in solid tumors and with Hodgkin lymphoma — treatment that is not only going to advance our ability to cure these patients, but treatment that really is going to make sure that every child has the absolute best chance for living a long and productive life free of the complications that can occur as a result of therapy.”
