Patient Celebrates 100th Birthday After Completing Proton Therapy
One of the unique properties of proton therapy is the lack of a significant exit dose. This opens up opportunities for patients that have already received radiation, to possibly re-irritate areas that could be damaged with conventional X-ray treatments.
This was the case for Mr. Ben Schulman, who recently turned 100 during the last week of his proton treatment. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992, which spread to his spine. He was treated twice with X-ray radiation successfully, but in 2016 a second tumor appeared. Not wanting to risk bone destruction, he was to begin proton therapy.
Recently, Mr. Schulman finished his treatment and celebrated his 100th birthday at the Scripps Proton Center in San Diego. He hopes to resume playing golf twice a week!
