Proton therapy treatments, technology and access grow

An article published by DOTmed looks back after the ten-year anniversary of the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute (UFHPTI). The center opened its doors in August of 2006 and was the first proton therapy treatment center in the Southeast United States. They are still looking to grow with an expansion of another compact, single room treatment system with PBS in the near future. Some of the highlights from the last ten years from the article include:

• Treating over 6,400 patients in 20 different types of cancers
• Published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles on proton therapy
• 39 million expansion project to increase capacity by 25%
• Expanding the utilization of proton therapy to explore treatments for ‘head and neck cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, cancer of the GI tract, sarcomas, pediatric non-CNS cancers, and lymphoma’
